UNITE HERE-Represented Hotel Workers Are On Strike, Which Is ‘Expanding Over Pay, Benefits & Workloads’

(CHICAGO, ILLINOIS) - Chicago’s Hotel Strike is expanding, with Union-represented Workers employed at the Hilton Chicago and Hyatt Regency Chicago joining an ongoing Labor dispute over wages, health care, pensions and working conditions. The latest walkouts add to Strikes that began earlier this month at six other Downtown Hotels. The broader contract fight covers more than 7,000 Workers across 46 properties, including Room Attendants, Cooks, Dishwashers, Front Desk Agents, Servers and Bartenders. Workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 1 are seeking better pay, stronger benefits, Civil Rights protections and safer workloads. The Union says 85% of its Members voted in September to authorize the Strike action after contracts with major Hotel operators expired on August 31st. For many workers, the dispute is about whether hospitality jobs provide enough stability to keep up with the cost of living. The strike is unfolding as Chicago’s Tourism Industry continues to generate billions in visitor spending and hotel revenue. That contrast is central to the Union’s argument: The industry is thriving, while many of the people cleaning rooms, preparing meals and serving guests say they are still struggling to make ends meet.
