UNITE HERE Local 1 says Hotel Workers in Downtown Chicago properties could go on Strike any day now. Contracts at 46 Hotels, which cover some 7,000 Workers, expired on August 31st, according to The Chicago Tribune. Earlier this week, the Hotel Workers voted to Strike by an 85% margin and an “overwhelming majority” of the 46 Hotels were represented in the vote, according to The Tribune. The Union did not specify which Hotel’s Workers authorized strikes. The Unionized Workers are a combination of Room Attendants, Cooks, Dishwashers, Front Desk Agents and Food Service Workers. The Strike would be the most significant Labor action in the Chicago Hospitality Industry since 2018, when 97% of Union-represented Hotel Workers at upwards of 24 Hotels voted to walk off the job. Now, Workers could walk off the job at any time. With separate bargaining agreements per Hotel Chain, it’s possible for the strikes to come in waves or for some, but not all, to walk off the job.
