Rochester, New York-Area Manufacturing Pipeline ‘Gets Boost From’ Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Andrea Deckertat at The Rochester Business Journal reports five participants recently completed the sixth annual Genesee Valley Mechatronics Pre-Apprenticeship Boot Camp, gaining classroom instruction and paid work experience aimed at preparing them for careers in advanced manufacturing. The Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association, the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership, Genesee Community College and the Genesee County Economic Development Center celebrated the graduates of the six-week program, which combines free technical training with paid, on-the-job experience at local manufacturing companies. This year’s participants completed 96 hours of classroom instruction at the Genesee Valley BOCES in Batavia, followed by more than 100 hours of paid on-the-job experience. The program follows an earn-while-you-learn model designed to give participants both foundational technical skills and exposure to the workplace. Since its launch, the program has placed more than 50 participants into full-time employment, with several going on to Registered Apprenticeship Programs.
