Tyler Carey at WKYC3 reports that after months of negotiations and a looming Strike that was called off at literally the last possible minute, Union-represented Workers and Trustees at the Cleveland Public Library have officially ratified a new contract that includes salary increases, Paid Parental Leave and health care coverage protections. Service Employees International Union (SEIU) District 1199 announced their ratification vote Wednesday night before the Library Board of Trustees unanimously followed suit during a special meeting Thursday afternoon, bringing to a close the threat of a walkout by the Union's roughly 400 Library Employees. Those Workers had been set to Strike at noon this past Monday before both SEIU 1199 and the Library struck a tentative deal less than 30 minutes prior to the deadline. The Employees instead stayed at their posts until the full details of the contract were eventually finalized. According to the Union, all SEIU 1199-represented Employees will receive 5% retroactive wage payments dating back to January and see their overall salaries rise by an average of 15% over the duration of the contract. Full-Time Workers will also enjoy immediate $500 bonuses while Part-Time Workers will get $250 checks. SEIU 1199 President Becky Williams said: "This contract is a testament to the strength, determination and solidarity of our Members. The Library came to the table seeking significant concessions, but our Members and Bargaining Team refused to back down. This is what ‘Union Power’ looks like - and it is a model for what Workers can accomplish when they stand together."
