(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) has joined Floyd v. Department of Justice in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The NTEU joins as a plaintiff to defend Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Employees who administer Tax Laws fairly, impartially and free from political interference - and to protect the integrity of the Nation's Tax System.

Through the amended complaint, the NTEU is challenging the provisions of an Immunity Order that broadly grants immunity to President Donald Trump, his family and his family's business interests from tax audits.

These previously unchallenged provisions are widely believed to be unconstitutional and unlawful under the Internal Revenue Code - and they will force NTEU Members who conduct audits covered by the Immunity Order into an untenable position: Carry out an unlawful directive and violate their oath of office or defy a direct order and risk losing their job.

NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald said: “At its core, this case is about protecting the integrity of the Federal Civil Service and IRS Employees. NTEU is joining this lawsuit to make it clear: IRS Employees should never be forced to choose between following a political directive to keep their job and following the law and their oath to the Constitution. The integrity of our Tax System depends on one fundamental principle: Every taxpayer is subject to the same laws and the same standards. When political actors direct Employees to treat certain taxpayers differently, it undermines public confidence in our Tax System and places dedicated Civil Servants in an impossible position.”

The NTEU's participation in the lawsuit reflects a long-standing commitment to protecting the rights of Federal Employees and preserving public trust in the Federal Agencies that serve the American Public.
