Elijah Skipper at WLOS Asheville/Greenville reports during a visit to Broughton Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein announced a new Apprenticeship Program aimed at building a pipeline of Health Care Workers as State Facilities continue to face staffing shortages. The STEP-NC: Health Care Program is the first Health Care Apprenticeship Program created within State Government. The Pilot Program is launching at Broughton Hospital and J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, both located in Morganton, with the goal of connecting students and adult learners with careers in Health Care. State leaders say the program is designed to create a workforce pipeline earlier by introducing students to careers in Behavioral Health, Maintenance, Nursing and Other Health Care Fields. Broughton Hospital CEO Dr. Timothy Miller said the Apprenticeship Model could help address staffing challenges while giving students career opportunities close to home. These include jobs in direct care, administrative support and maintenance.
