AFSCME-Represented Pittsford Department of Public Works Employees ‘Rally To Demand Better Pay’
Union-represented Public Workers employed in Pittsford’s Department of Public Works rallied earlier this week in front of the Suburban Rochester Town Hall to demand better pay. As the first Union in Pittsford's 200-year history, the Workers are making history while fighting for a fair contract and the respect they have earned, Union Officials said. They deserve a voice on the job and a contract that recognizes the essential services they provide every day, added American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 66 Representatives. The Union says despite Pittsford being a largely wealthy community, its Workers remain among the lowest-paid Public Works Employees in Monroe County, making it a challenge to retain Employees. Council 66’s Maria Fisher said two Workers just resigned this week due to low wages. “And they love this town, you know, they were even asked by the attorney: ‘Why do you even stay when you make low wages?’ They say: ‘We love each other and we love this town’ and they want to stay,” Fisher said. “These Workers are doing the work that keeps Pittsford running, so we believe the wages should be reflective of that work.”
