After New York City Carriage Horse's Death, The Transit Workers Union Says Carriage Drivers Face Threats & Anti-Immigrant Harassment As The TWU ‘Battles Against A Bill To Shut Down’ The Carriages
(NEW YORK CITY) - The death of Deniz, a carriage horse that collapsed and died in Central Park, has reignited debate over New York City's Horse-Carriage Industry. But for the Carriage Drivers represented by Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100, the days following the horse's death have also brought a wave of threats, harassment and anti-Immigrant attacks on-line. Deniz died on June 9th after collapsing while carrying two passengers through Central Park. The horse's cause of death has not yet been determined - and a full necropsy is being conducted at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. According to TWU Local 100, Deniz had last been examined by a NYPD Veterinarian in March and was deemed fit for work. The death of an 18-year-old tourist following a horse-drawn carriage accident in Central Park has intensified calls from Animal Welfare Advocates to ban the industry - but the Union representing Carriage Drivers says the tragedy underscores the need for stronger safety measures, rather than eliminating hundreds of Carriage Driver jobs.
