The National AFL-CIO Sports Council On The Federal Protect College Sports Act

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Leadership at the National AFL-CIO Sports Council released the following statement on the Protect Sports Act (PCSA):

We are the AFL-CIO Sports Council, representing Athlete Workers across Professional Sports in the United States and Canada. We came together to build power across Professional Sports and fight for the rights of the Workers who put their bodies on the line to create the profit sports Leagues collect. All Workers deserve safe workplaces, equal pay, fair benefits and a share of revenue, freedom from harassment and discrimination, and a voice on the job - including Professional and College Athletes. While we appreciate the thoughtful engagement that has gone into improving Federal legislation to strengthen protections for College Athletes, we believe there needs to be more work done on the Protect College Sports Act (PCSA). As written, the Bill further silences College Athletes’ voices on the job, undermines their right to Collective Bargaining to improve their workplace conditions, jeopardizes fair compensation and stops States from passing laws that would protect and advance their rights.

The PCSA would:

Provide the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), NCAA Conferences and Schools with the ability to solely determine College Athletes’ compensation, including: Name, image and likeness rights; Working conditions, including health and safety issues and transfers; and Eligibility without any negotiations or Collective Bargaining.

Reverse progress that has been made toward ensuring that workplaces are free from harassment and discrimination by placing the burden on Athletes rather than creating meaningful oversight and accountability for Title IX violations.

Create an arbitrary cap on College Athletes’ compensation, limiting the share of the revenue they generate, while Schools, Conferences, broadcasters, sponsors and the NCAA itself capitalize on their labor by raking in billions of dollars.

Prohibit State Legislatures from passing laws that would advance College Athletes’ Worker rights, including workplace protections and fair name, image and likeness compensation.

The National AFL-CIO Sports Council was formed in 2022 to build power across Unions in Professional Sports, amplify the voices of athletes and shine a light on the challenges they face as Workers.

It also aligns the interests of Athletes in Professional Sports industries and beyond.
