United University Professions & New York State Reach Agreement On A Five-Year Tentative Contract That Includes Annual Wage Increases & Makes ‘Common Sense Changes’ To Health Insurance To Help Control Premiums, And More

(ALBANY, NEW YORK) – New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has announced her administration has reached a contract agreement with the United University Professions (UUP) for a five-year term running until July 1st, 2031.

The agreement is subject to ratification by Union Membership, which includes 42,000 State University of New York (SUNY) System Faculty and Professional Employees.

The contract includes annual increases in basic annual salary for Employees throughout the agreement. It also includes other increases in compensation, such as location pay - and provides for additional leave for prenatal care. It also makes common sense changes to health insurance to help control premiums, eliminate co-pays and reduce the use of out-of-network providers.

“This agreement with United University Professions is good for both the hard-working Faculty and Professionals of SUNY and for the taxpayers of New York State,” Governor Hochul said. “I thank the leadership of UUP for working toward this fair deal and I thank their talented Members for their dedication and commitment to New York’s college students, ensuring a bright future for those pursuing a SUNY education.”

UUP President Fred Kowal said: “I am very pleased to announce UUP has reached a tentative agreement with the State on a new contract. All our efforts to get to the table early and conclude an agreement before our present one expired have succeeded. Thanks to so many of you, and especially to Bret Benjamin, Jeremy Ginsburg and our entire Negotiations Team. This historic agreement addresses many of the priorities Members shared with us throughout the negotiations process and reflects our Union’s commitment to securing the strongest possible contract for our Members. We got some very big wins and that testifies to the importance of our collective efforts. And it's vitally important that I emphasize how much I personally appreciate Governor Hochul’s continued support for UUP Members and the important work we do every day.”

SUNY Chancellor John King, Jr. said: “SUNY’s extraordinary Faculty and Staff are the heart of our ability to deliver affordable excellence and serve as New York State’s engine of upward mobility. New Yorkers rely on SUNY for a world-class education, ground-breaking research and scholarship, medical support and expertise, and other essential needs and services. I applaud Governor Hochul for achieving a fair contract that respects and recognizes the Faculty and Staff who make SUNY such an extraordinary place for our students.”
