NY Creates, Micron Start Workforce Training Program In Albany To Supply Future Workers For Memory Chip Plant Currently Being Built In The Syracuse Suburb Of Clay
Larry Rulison at The Albany Times Union reports NY Creates and Idaho-based Chipmaker Micron Technology have started a 16-month Apprenticeship Program in the Capital Region. The goal is that 70% of the participants will end up with jobs at Micron, which is planning to build several Memory Chip operations in the Syracuse Suburb of Clay. The program will be held at NY Creates' Albany NanoTech Facility in Albany and at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy. There will be no cost for participants. Micron is headquartered in Boise, Idaho and also has operations in Manassas, Virginia. Micron is spending $200 billion expanding and building at the three sites, requiring the hiring of tens of thousands of Workers. The Apprenticeship Program will begin in August. There will be three 16-month courses with 10 participants each, NY Creates and Micron announced. The training is not exclusive to future Micron Workers, as the courses are designed for any Worker looking to become a technician at a Chip Factory. Construction of the Micron operation in Clay is not scheduled to be finished until 2030.
