‘The Clock Is Ticking:’ ‘Strike Looms’ As Unionized LIRR Workers ‘Face Another Year Without A Raise’
Matthew Euzarraga at PIX 11 reports there are just over two weeks until a potential Strike by Unionized Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Workers, who’ve gone three years without a raise. Union Leaders met last week with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) following heated discussions at a recent Board meeting. During the public comment period, Gil Lang, who serves as General Chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) for the LIRR, criticized the MTA for its lack of urgency. He spoke on behalf of the five Unions currently engaged in contract negotiations. Currently, the BLET and four other Unions - the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; the Transportation Communications Union; the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen - are trying to hammer out new contract agreements.
