In Maryland, Howard County’s $43 Million Trades Hub ‘Gears Up To Fix Jobs Crunch’
Kevin Harris at hoodline Baltimore reports on Howard Community College’s (HCC) Cathy and Danny Bell Workforce Development and Trades Center, a 50,000-plus-square-foot complex built with one goal in mind: To move local residents straight into skilled-trade jobs. Students who will be welcomed in the Fall will find hands-on labs for automotive, welding, plumbing and electrical work, along with Registered Apprenticeships and short-term certificates that are designed to lead directly to paychecks instead of long years in lecture halls. The Workforce Development & Trades Center will house automotive bays, welding bays, more than 100 work-stations, mechatronics and cyber-security labs, and space for Registered Electrical, HVACR, and Plumbing Apprenticeships. The school says it will include simulators and industry-grade equipment that mirror real job sites. HCC also plans to build green-technology modules into Trade training programs so students pick up skills employers say they need - right now. The project carries a $43 million price tag and has been financed with a mix of private donations and public support, WBAL-TV reported.
