Jefferson Community College ‘Highlights’ State University Of New York Apprenticeship Program
Jefferson Community College in Watertown, New York is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week by showcasing its role in the State of New York (SUNY) Apprenticeship Program, which aims to address New York’s workforce needs. Through partnerships with regional employers, JCC offers Registered Apprenticeships that combine paid training and classroom instruction, allowing Apprentices to gain experience and industry-recognized credentials while often incurring little to no student debt. Employers benefit from tailored training that enhances Employee skills and retention. Research indicates such Apprenticeship Programs can yield significant returns, averaging $1.47 for each dollar invested. The New York State Department of Labor approves and oversees Registered Apprenticeships, ensuring training is consistent, high-quality and meets industry requirements. According to Joanna Brislan, who serves as Director of Military Enrollment and Workforce Solutions, Apprenticeships effectively link education to real-world workforce needs. She says that through the partnership with SUNY and local employers, they are assisting individuals in earning while learning and developing a robust talent pipeline to foster economic growth in the North Country. The College offers Apprenticeship Programs in various industries such as manufacturing, health care, education, IT, digital imaging, agriculture, hospitality and business services. Typically, Apprentices undergo at least 2,000 hours of supervised training and over 144 hours of classroom instruction, with program durations from one to six years.
