The National AFL-CIO On The Resignation Of U.S. Labor Secretary Chavez-DeRemer: “We Need A Labor Secretary Who Understands Working People And Will Work To Make Our Lives Better - Not Just Be A Rubber Stamp For Corporations’ Wish Lists”

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – National AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler issued the following statement in response to Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s resignation as U.S. Secretary of Labor:

When we’re in a crisis of costs going up, job insecurity due to AI (Artificial Intelligence) and technology, and uncertainty across the economy, we need a Labor Secretary who understands Working People and will work to make our lives better - not just be a rubber stamp for corporations’ wish lists and gut the protections we count on.

The news of Secretary of Labor Chavez-DeRemer stepping down came amid a months-long investigation into her leadership of the Federal Agency that stemmed from allegations of misconduct. It follows a series of civil rights complaints inside the Agency under her leadership, as well as an investigation conducted by the Agency’s Inspector General’s Office into the conduct of Chavez-DeRemer and her senior aides. The claims against her include allegations that she had an affair with a subordinate, who was a member of her security team, as well as allegations that she drank alcohol during the workday. Chavez-DeRemer was also accused of using Department resources for personal travel.
