‘This Is How We Build A Future That Works For All Of Us’ - The National AFL-CIO Convenes Workers First AI Summit

On Thursday (March 26th), the National AFL-CIO and the AFL-CIO Tech Institute brought together Workers, Lawmakers and Policy Experts for the Workers First AI Summit. This landmark gathering comes after the National AFL-CIO released a first-of-its-kind set of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Principles last year. The Summit was dedicated to discussing how to ensure AI creates widespread prosperity for Working People and their communities rather than just further enriching the wealthiest technology companies and their investors. National AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler and AFL-CIO Tech Institute Executive Director Lauren McFerran delivered remarks alongside Labor Leaders, Non-Profit Heads, Academics, Corporate Representatives and more. “Everyone in this room is a leader. The question today is: Can we lead together,” Shuler said in her remarks. “(There’re) so many different skill-sets in this room - folks from different backgrounds and perspectives. That’s on purpose. We want to push ourselves to find unconventional partnerships, challenge each other in ways we haven’t before, build that big coalition we need! That is how we build a future that works for all of us.”

Here are the National AFL-CIO’s Key Priorities for Worker-Centered AI:

  1. Strengthen Labor Rights And Broaden Opportunities For Collective Bargaining
  2. Advance Guardrails Against Harmful Uses Of AI In The Workplace
  3. Support And Promote Copyright And Intellectual Property Protections
  4. Develop A Worker-Centered Workforce Development And Training System
  5. Institutionalize Worker Voice Within AI R&D
  6. Require Transparency And Accountability In AI Applications
  7. Model Best Practices For AI Use With Government Procurement
  8. Protect Workers’ Civil Rights And Uphold Democratic Integrity
