New York City ‘Faces Possible Strike by 34,000 Doormen & Building Workers’ - Union Calls Realty Advisory Board’s Contract Proposal ‘Insulting’

Michelle Kaske at Bloomberg News reports New York City apartment residents are being put on notice of a potential Strike by Unionized Building Staff as soon as next month as the Union representing the Workers and an Advisory Board to building owners negotiate a new contract. Property owners are alerting occupants of 3,500 co-ops, condos and apartment buildings that services will decrease if a work suspension begins on April 21st. That’s the day after the four-year-old contract expires for nearly 34,000 Doormen, Porters and Maintenance Workers. If there’s a Strike, residents will need to wear badges to enter buildings.

And from The Brooklyn Daily Eagle: the Union that represents 34,000 Superintendents, Maintenance Workers, Front Desk Staff and Resident Managers in most of New York City’s residential buildings says it is preparing for a Strike after receiving “insulting” contract changes from the Realty Advisory Board (RAB) on Labor Relations, which represents building owners. According to a release from 32BJ Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the RAB’s proposals include: Shifting the cost of health care onto Workers via premium sharing; The introduction of a lower-paid Tier II Workforce; The expansion of Temp Workers; The weakening of contract enforcement; and The lack of a commitment to pension improvements. The Union points out the Real Estate Industry is enjoying “record high rents, high property values and historic low vacancy rates.” The current four-year master contract agreement between the Union and building owners expires on April 20th. A Strike would affect roughly 600,000 New York City households, according to 32BJ SEIU.
