Unionized New York University Professors Reach Tentative Contract Deal That Ends Two-Day Strike - Contract Secures First-Year Raise of 20% For 930 Faculty Members
George Weykamp at Bloomberg Law reports more than 900 Non-Tenure Track Professors have reached a tentative contract with New York University (NYU), ending a brief work-stoppage that affected roughly half of NYU’s Full-Time Faculty. The Contract Faculty United-United Auto Workers (CFU-UAW), which represents about 930 Faculty Members who aren’t eligible for tenure, said the Bargaining Committee has secured an average first-year raise of 20%. CFU-UAW Members teach about 25% of all classes across NYU, according to the University. The Faculty Members walked off the job on March 23rd, asking for higher wages and housing benefits to offset the cost of living in New York City. According to the CFU-UAW, its agreement includes “historic economic improvements and establishes important new workplace right for all Contract Faculty.” “It not only improves our lives as Faculty, but also makes NYUY a more equitable, stronger and freer University,” the Union said in a statement on its website.
