From The United Steelworkers: The SAVE Act ‘Silences Eligible Voices At The Ballot Box’

On February 11th (2026), the House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act by a vote of 218-to-213 after stripping the contents of a bipartisan Veterans Bill and using it as the vehicle for the legislation. The SAVE Act would require documents like a passport or birth certificate to register to vote or update voter registration - documents that an estimated 21 million eligible voters do not have easy access to. These requirements would disproportionately impact Working Class Americans, including rural voters, Naturalized Citizens, young voters, Women whose names have changed, Seniors and Communities of Color that already face barriers accessing official records. The United Steelworkers (USW) believe elections must be secure, but every eligible voter deserves a fair and equal voice at the ballot box. The SAVE Act creates unnecessary barriers that could silence millions of Working People.
