Columbia-United Auto Workers-Represented University Student Workers ‘Overwhelmingly Approve Potential’ Strike

Dora Gao at The Columbia Spectator reports Student Workers of Columbia-United Auto Workers (SWC-UAW) have voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a potential Strike following months of stalled contract negotiations with the University. Union Members voted 1,129-to-105 (more than 91%) in favor, according to the SWC-UAW, which represents 3,000 Graduate and Undergraduate Students who provide research or instructional labor to the University. Although the vote does not immediately trigger a Strike, it allows Union Leadership to call one if negotiations continue to stall. Negotiations are still ongoing for a contract that began in March 2025 - ahead of the June 30th, 2025 expiration date of the previous contract between the University and the SWC-UAW - which was the first of its kind at Columbia. The Union is pushing for higher wages, expanded health care benefits and protections for Non-Citizen Workers, among others. However, the University and the Union are said to remain far apart on virtually all issues.
