The Daily News Union & The NewsGuild of New York Respond As Alden Global Capital Begins Mass Layoffs At The New York City Daily Newspaper
(NEW YORK CITY) - The Daily News Union and the The NewsGuild of New York released the following statement as Alden Global Capital begins mass layoffs at the New York City Daily Newspaper:
Alden Global Capital - the Nation’s most predatory newspaper owner - has again lived up to its reputation as the parasitic “destroyer of newspapers.”
In what can only be described as a corporate-word-salad-maybe-even-AI-generated e-mail, Alden’s minions notified our Union that they were swinging the ax yet again at New York’s Hometown Paper.
The blow: Our Union will lose 28% of our Members through these egregious layoffs.
To be clear: These layoffs, which are the direct result of the repellent corporate greed that Alden Global Capital is known for, are being done without any concern for the future of The Daily News.
From Michael Sheridan, our Unit Chair: This latest move by Alden Global Capital to gut the Staff of the New York Daily News, our City’s hometown newspaper, is another sad reminder that the hedge fund and its owners have no interest in investing in local journalism, but instead want only to squeeze the paper and its staff dry in order to enrich themselves. The dedicated Reporters, Photographers and Editors at the 107-year-old institution deserve better, and so does New York City.
These mass layoffs will impact our Print Production Team and our National Desk the most.
The National Desk will lose six of its 10 Reporters, leaving it stripped of its diversity, at a time when the National Desk has never been more important to our readers.
Generic fonts, which rolled out last week and killed the signature look of The Daily News, paved the way for today’s elimination of our Print Production Team.
It’s also not surprising that Alden and the Daily News’ management are conducting these layoffs in ways that undermine the seniority protections in our new contract.
Alden and Daily News management have consistently, throughout our existence as a Union, tried to ignore the fact that they have a Unionized Work Force.
We’re not going away.
In fact, as we always do, we will vigorously enforce our contract and ensure that our affected Members receive every protection to which they are entitled.
We will keep covering the City we call home, bringing you news you can rely on.
And we will continue to fight to defend The Daily News, because now more than ever, we are too tough to die.
