San Francisco Teachers Strike ‘Ends With Tentative Agreement On Raises & Benefits’

(SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA) - A historic, week-long Strike by United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) came to an end Friday (February 13th) when the Union and the San Francisco United School District have agreed on a tentative contract.

The UESF began its first Strike in nearly 50 years on Monday (February 9th) after 11 months of failed negotiations with the School District. Schools were shuttered for roughly 50,000 students as thousands of educators flocked to picket lines. More than 250 Principals, Office Clerks and Custodians in two other Unions went on a sympathy Strike in solidarity.

The UESF issued the following statement after the agreement was reached: “None of this would have been possible without the thousands of you who have shown up to our Board actions, signed petitions to commit to our campaign, written letters to our Board of Education, and - in the last four days, shown up in the rain to support your big Bargaining Team in the streets. This Strike has made it clear what is possible when we join together and fight for the stability in our Schools that many have said was out of our reach.”

Some of the wins for the UESF in the tentative agreement include: Fully-funded health care for Employee and dependents for all Members that will be fully-implemented by January 1st, 2027 and meaningful relief from health care costs in 2026; Wage increase of 8.5% over two years and one floating holiday day for Classified Employees, a 5% wage increase over two years for Certificated Employees; Immediate relief for Special Educators in the form of caseload reductions; Sanctuary protections for students and educators; Preservation and Expansion of the Stayover Program for unhoused students and families; Limitations on the District’s use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and contracting out; and Better working conditions.

Educators return to their classrooms Wednesday as the contract ratification process begins, UESF Officials said.
