‘Is This A Harbinger Of What Is To Come In The November Elections?’ - Democrat & IAM Union Leader Secures ‘Significant Victory’ In A Texas State Senate Special Election, ‘Flipping A District That Donald Trump Carried By 17 Points In 2024’

(FORT WORTH, TEXAS) - Democrat and International Association of Machinists (IAM) Union Leader Taylor Rehmet has secured a significant victory in a Texas State Senate Special Election, flipping a district that Donald Trump carried by 17 points in 2024.

Rehmet, a Veteran and the President of the IAM Texas State Council comfortably defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss, a Conservative Activist, in the Fort Worth-area District on Saturday (January 31st).

With nearly all votes tallied, Rehmet established a lead of more than 14 percentage points.

With 95% of precincts reporting, Rehmet earned 57.2% of the vote.

Addressing his supporters, he declared: "This win goes to everyday Working People."

The outcome adds to a pattern of Democrats outperforming expectations in Special Elections this cycle. Party strategists suggest it indicates a strong voter motivation to reject Republican candidates and policies under the second Trump Administration.

Rehmet’s passion for fairness and dignity on the job led him to Union Organizing, where he was elected President of both his Local and State Chapters of the IAM.

As a graduate of the Texas AFL-CIO’s Ruth Ellinger Leadership Academy, Rehmet’s committed to taking the fight for working Texans to the State Capitol.

Texas AFL-CIO President Leonard Aguilar said: “This is a huge win for Texas Workers. Taylor embodies what it means to be a Union Leader - working together to address the struggles of real, everyday Texans. While State parties are trying to reconnect with the Working Class, we’re running Union Members up and down the ballot - and winning. Taylor’s historic win kicks off a slate of Rank-and-File Union Members running for office to fight for all of us.”

The Texas AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education (COPE) Board just announced its 2026 primary endorsements, which includes 15 endorsed Union Members running for State-level positions, who were Union Members before they were candidates.
