Production Workers At Arena Stage In Washington, D.C. ‘Go Union,’ Join IATSE

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Eighty Backstage Production Workers employed at Arena Stage, one of the Nation’s leading Regional Theaters, have voted to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).

In a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Election, Workers voted overwhelmingly for Union Representation, with more than 85% of ballots cast in favor.

The Bargaining Unit is comprised of Stagehands, Wardrobe, Hair/Makeup and Scenic Workers – who will be represented by IATSE Locals 22, 772, 798 and USA 829.

This victory marks a significant milestone for Theater Workers in Washington, D.C. and represents the culmination of years of organizing efforts.

Workers have been discussing Unionization for more than four years, with the effort gaining traction last Summer before the current season began.

In a show of good faith, Arena Stage management agreed to a neutrality agreement and honored it throughout the process, allowing Workers to make their decision without interference.

IATSE Local 22 Vice President Nicholas Arancibia said: “This is an amazing step for the Workers at Arena Stage and Washington, D.C. in general. This is the third Regional Theater in the D.C. area to win recognition with IATSE in the last six years. Workers are stepping up and making sure everyone is taken care of and has a path forward for a better life through a Union.”

For Backstage Production Workers at Arena Stage, Union Representation means improved working conditions, job security and a collective voice in their workplace.

As a LORT (League of Resident Theatres) Regional Theater, Arena Stage depends on the skilled craftsmanship and dedication of its Production Workers to deliver world-class performances.

IATSE International Representative Dan Little said: “Arena Stage Workers are part of a long tradition of Artists and Technicians who know the magic onstage is built by collective work backstage. Their Union vote is part of a growing national movement for solidarity and security.”

IATSE represents more than 170,000 Technicians, Artisans and Craftspersons in the Entertainment Industry, including live events, motion picture and television production, broadcast and trade shows in the United States and Canada.
