West Virginia Mine Wars Museum Staff Unionize In Collaboration With The United Mine Workers Of America
Brandi Blake at WVNS Bluefield reports from Matewan, Virginia that Staff at the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum has Unionized, becoming an official part of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). UMWA President Brian Sanson said: “We are honored and excited to represent the West Virginia United Mine Wars Museum Staff as Members of the United Mine Workers of America. These Workers protect and share the story of sacrifice, solidarity and courage that defines our Union. We are proud to stand with them, to represent them and to welcome them home to the UMWA Family.” A press release noted a contract was signed with the historic District 17 and Local Union 1440, whose Union Hall is located just a few blocks away from the site of the Battle of Matewan and the Museum itself. The strong Membership of Local 1440 was one of the driving factors in opening the institution in Matewan, with Union Members becoming founding Members that helped to establish the museum more than 10 years ago.
