Workers At Chemical & Engineering News Announce Union Campaign

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)- Workers employed at Chemical & Engineering News, the independent magazine of the American Chemical Society, have announced the formation of the Chemical & Engineering News Guild.

The majority of Chemical & Engineering News’ Union-eligible Staffers have signed cards indicating their desire to form a Collective Bargaining Unit and become part of the Washington Baltimore News Guild, The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America (CWA).

The Guild is seeking voluntary recognition from the American Chemical Society, CE&N’s parent employer.

Chemical & Engineering News, better known as C&EN, is a 102-year-old institution.

Since 1923, it has chronicled science, business and policy developments across the Global Chemical Enterprise.

Its coverage has earned recognition by Awards Committees around the world.

This work is not possible without the collaborative efforts of reporters, Copy Editors, Production and Operations Staff, Web and Creative Designers, Multimedia Producers and the Audience Development Team, among others.

The Chemical & Engineering News Guild seeks to band these Workers together and advocate for their continued well-being and empowerment.

“By forming the Chemical and Engineering News Guild, we hope to solidify the benefits we currently enjoy as American Chemical Society Employees and strengthen our Unit against headwinds that affect all media organizations,” said Madeline Monroe, an Art Director at C&EN.

“We look forward to engaging with the Society in good faith and with mutual respect,” she said.
