Unions Representing 40,000 Academic & Research University Of California Employees Announce Strike Vote
Josephine Murphy at The Daily Bruin reports Unions representing about 40,000 Academic and Research Employees across the University of California (UC) plan to hold a Strike Authorization Vote in February for an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike. United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 4811-Research and Public Service Professionals-UAW and Student Services and Academic Professionals-UAW announced the vote. A website for the three Unions said demands for their Members include job security, opportunities for career advancement and protections for International Workers. “It’s time to show UC management that their unlawful behavior won’t be tolerated and that we’re each ready to take collective action to defend our University, our rights and our future,” the Unions said. They threatened to Strike in late November when they held rallies at campuses across the UC to demand the University pay its Workers higher wages and implement protections for international students. The Unions allege UC has committed unlawful interference, engaged in bad-faith bargaining and implemented unilateral changes to working conditions throughout negotiations. UAW Local 4811 has held multiple rallies and protests across the UC since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term to push the University to counter Federal policies, including Federal research funding cuts and visa revocations for international students.
