In Iowa, High School Students Learn About Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Programs - Exit Surveys Indicate 34% Of The Kids Who Attended The Career Fair ‘Are Planning To Join An Apprenticeship Program’ When They Graduate From High School
Tracey Lamm at The Hawk Eye reports for the past nine years, skilled Trade Apprenticeship Programs have joined with the Iowa Army National Guard and IowaWorks to introduce high school students to the world of work, available in a different sort of classroom. Nearly 300 students from across Southeast Iowa recently convened at the Iowa Army National Guard Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown, Iowa for a Career Fair and demonstration by people who are part of several Skilled Trades Vocations including Electricians, Millwrights, Operating Engineers, Ironworkers, Sheet Metal Workers, and Plumbers and Pipefitters. Students got a first look at the requirements for participating in an Apprenticeship Program, how to sign up, and some of the jobs duties and responsibilities. Exit surveys indicate 34% of the kids who attended are planning to join an Apprenticeship Program when they graduate from high school.
