Condé Union, New Yorker Union, NewsGuild Of New York ‘Rally To Demand Reversal Of Illegal Firings & Suspensions’

NewsGuild of New York-represented Workers at Condé Nast rallied last week outside of CN HQ at World Trade Center to demand a full reversal of recent illegal firings and suspensions of the Fired Four, Condé Workers who were taking part in a legally protected Union action. “By retaliating against Journalists for peaceful and protected activity, the company is trampling on our rights, our Union contracts and the independence and integrity of The New Yorker and the Condé brands we represent. We will not be intimidated and we will win,” said Daniel Gross, Co-Chair of The New Yorker Union. “Condé Nast's ham-handed Union Busting is an embarrassment to the celebrated magazines that it owns.” New York State Attorney General Letitia James and directly impacted Members from the Condé and New Yorker Unions spoke at the event, as well as Elected Officials and Union Leaders - including NewsGuild of New York President Susan DeCarava, The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America (TNG-CWA) President Jon Schleuss, CWA District One President Billy Gallagher and New York City AFL-CIO Central Labor Council President Brendan Griffith. The rally, which drew several hundred people, was the latest action taken by the Guild in response to the illegal firings and suspensions. Condé Nast management terminated four Condé United Leaders and suspended five others for engaging in the protected concerted activity of gathering in their 1 World Trade Center Office to demand answers on the abrupt layoffs at multiple brands - including WIRED and the consolidation at Teen Vogue. “Management must reinstate the Fired Four and our suspended five without further delay,” NewsGuild of New York President Susan DeCarava said. “Condé Nast management’s actions are an egregious attempt at Union-Busting and violate not only Labor Law - but the terms of our contracts."
