NewsGuild of New York-represented Journalists employed at The New York Daily News, along with many of the City’s top Elected Officials, Labor Leaders and other supporters, rallied last week ahead of the City Council’s scheduled vote on its history-making Too Tough To Die resolution, urging Owner Alden Global Capital to reach a fair contract with its Workers. Current and former Daily News Journalists spoke about the importance of New York City’s hometown paper and the strong message the resolution sends to the Newspaper’s Hedge Fund Owner. Democratic Councilmember Carmen De La Rosa introduced the resolution spoke about the vital place The Daily News has in the City and why its Journalists deserve a contract that allows them to continue their important work. The resolution is the strongest rebuke of Alden’s predatory practices since the Hedge Fund first began gobbling up newspapers. It is also the only New York City Council resolution in recent memory to specifically call for the City’s support of a Media Union. NewsGuild of New York President Susan DeCarava, New York City AFL-CIO Central Labor Council President Brendan Griffith and other City Labor Leaders also spoke, emphasizing how crucial it is to push back against Alden’s assault on both Labor Rights and journalism. The vote passing the resolution took place shortly after the rally during the City Council’s regular meeting.
