New York City Mayor Eric Adams Announces City Civil Service Youth Apprenticeship Program, A ‘First-Of-Its-Kind Initiative Creating A Direct Pipeline For’ Young New Yorkers ‘To Launch Careers In City Government’

Kayla Simas at The Staten Island Advance report New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced a new Civil Service Youth Apprentice title, a first-of-its-kind initiative creating a direct pipeline for young New Yorkers to launch careers in City Government. Under the new program, up to 500 young adults will be hired across Municipal Agencies for up to six years, gaining on-the-job training, classroom instruction and mentorship support. Those in the program will earn competitive wages, benefits and long-term advancement opportunities. The goal is to give participants the real-world experience needed to qualify for higher-level, permanent Civil Service titles and to help City Agencies attract and retain a new generation of skilled Workers. The initiative is a collaboration between the New York City Office of Talent and Workforce Development, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services and New York City Public Schools. “Our City is full of talented and driven young people ready to seize the next opportunity - but, too often, those opportunities never come,’' Adams said. “With this ground-breaking City Agency Apprenticeship, we’ll change that, giving hundreds of young New Yorkers the chance to more easily start their careers and save their City.” In his 2023 State of the City address, Adams set an ambitious “moonshot” goal of connecting 30,000 New Yorkers to Apprenticeships by 2030. As of the end of 2024, the City had already passed the halfway mark with more than 15,000 placements, according to the Mayor’s announcement.
