Hyatt Regency Workers United Announce A Boycott Of the Downtown Buffalo Hotel After The Hyatt ‘Fails To Begin Contract Negotiations With Its Newly-Unionized’ Workforce

Brayton Wilson at WBEN-AM reports Union Leaders are calling for a boycott of the Downtown Buffalo Hyatt Regency Hotel, which is embroiled in an ongoing labor dispute between Unionized Workers and management. Luke Sills, who has led the effort at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo and lost his job two months ago, says hotel management is still refusing to begin contract negotiations and reinstate several fired Workers. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled the Hyatt recognize their Workers’ Union and start bargaining in good faith. "We are asking people to cancel their reservations if they've already made them. If they're planning to travel to Buffalo in the future or near future, we are asking them to not book at this hotel and take the hotel out of consideration," said Sills, who added there have already been a number of groups that have agreed to support the boycott, including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Workers at the Hyatt began organizing in the Summer of 2024. In response, they were met with a vicious Anti-Union Campaign that included the unlawful termination of three Pro-Union Hotel Baristas, threats of retaliation and a campaign of fear and intimidation aimed at discouraging the hotel’s largely-Immigrant workforce, Union Officials said. Following an investigation, the NLRB found the Hyatt violated Federal Labor Law - and in an extremely rare move reserved for the most egregious cases, ordered the hotel to recognize the Union and begin good-faith bargaining. But rather than comply with the NLRB’s ruling and respect their Workers’ Federally-protected right to organize, the Hyatt escalated its unlawful conduct by firing Front Desk Worker and key Union Leader Sills, Union Officials said.
