Tucson, Arizona Electrical Apprenticeship Program ‘Sparks Interest’

Isabela Lisco at KOLD-TV in Tucson, Arizona reports on an Apprenticeship Program that is sparking student interest there. The Tucson Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is helping young adults jumpstart their careers. According to U.S. Census data, more than 8% of youth in Southern Arizona are disconnected - which means they aren’t in school or working. One barrier can be the cost of college and another can be perceptions of certain industries, like construction. The program costs between zero and $1,500 for the first year, depending on a student’s economic situation. Each subsequent year costs less, especially since students can begin earning money with on-the-job training hours. Isabella Velasquez, a first-year Apprentice, said she was intimidated at first since only about 4% of Electricians are Women. But after a good experience with the program, she now encourages other Women to join. “If you’re a girl in the Union, don’t be scared to get in here. Don’t be scared to get in the Trades,” she said.
