NALC Branch 210 President Calls String Of Rochester Mail Carrier Robberies “‘Unprecedented,” Points To The ‘Need For The Protect Our Letter Carrier Act To Be Passed’
Natalie Kucko at WROC-TV reports Rochester Police are investigating a string of robberies against Mail Carriers. In the last few weeks, Police have reported five incidents involving assault and theft toward United States Postal Service (USPS) Workers. Currently, there are no suspects in custody and Police have not identified a possible connection to any of the incidents. National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Local 210 President Monique Mate said: “This is something I’ve never seen. I’ve been with the Postal Service for thirty-four years and for twenty-five years I carried. There was never fear of going anywhere. This is something unprecedented.” Mate oversees more than 500 USPS Carriers in the Rochester area and says these latest incidents are grab and go crimes. While no serious injuries have been reported, Mate says the suspects are taking mail, packages, equipment and personal items. Mate also points to legislation being considered called the Protect Our Letter Carriers Act, a Federal Bill not passed yet, but one that would upgrade security measures for Postal Workers across the country.
