Workers ‘Denounce’ The Firing Of A Key Union Leader At The Downtown Buffalo Hyatt Regency Hotel, Allege Hotel Management Used ‘Interrogation & Threats In An Attempt To Stop Their Employees’ Union Organizing Campaign’

Joined by a number of Elected Officials, representatives of Buffalo Hyatt Workers United held a press conference outside the Downtown Hotel last week to condemn and denounce the firing of a key Union Leader. Luke Sills, who worked at the Hyatt for over two years and was named Employee of the Year, was a key leader of the Union Campaign and was leading the efforts to picket the Hyatt this Summer after the Hotel’s aggressive and cruel Union-Busting Campaign. Buffalo Toronto Public Media reports Sills said at the new conference: “When I joined the Organizing Committee to help organize a Union at this Hotel, they pulled me personally into this meeting, the general manager and the HR (Human Resources) Director, where they interrogated me, threatened me and told me that I was going to regret getting involved in this.” Sills - who was working as a Front Desk Supervisor when he got a call informing him of his termination, is accusing several members of hotel management with abuse and intimidation. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has already found the Buffalo Hyatt has broken Federal Labor Law, including firing other leaders. A trial date has been set in October. Meanwhile, the Hotel Workers are continuing their push to Unionize.

I worked at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo briefly back in 2023. Unfortunately, my experience was negatively impacted by poor leadership at the time. When I was asked why I chose to leave, I responded with a candid e-mail outlining serious concerns - many of which seem to be playing out now, particularly around violations of fair labor practices. That said, I want to highlight that Luke stood out as an exceptional Employee during my time there. I remember him well for his professionalism and dedication. I truly hope to see meaningful action taken to improve the culture and leadership at this property - one that reflects the values of the Hyatt brand and fosters a non-retaliatory, Employee-supportive environment. This situation underscores the risks that can come with poorly managed franchise operations - I hope real change is on the horizon. Posted by anonymous on August 21, 2025 at 1:54 pm
