Elected Officials In Rochester Boycott Interviews With Nexstar Media Group-Owned News Outlet To Support Under-Paid NABET-CWA Members

In a powerful show of solidarity, the Democratic New York State Delegation representing Monroe County has pledged to boycott any one-on-one interviews with WROC-TV until its parent company, Nexstar Media Group, bargains in good faith with the National Association of Broadcasting Employees and Technicians-Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA). Workers employed at the regional CBS affiliate voted to join the Union in February of 2023, but since then, the billion-dollar TV broadcasting company has refused to negotiate fairly with its Staff. NABET-CWA Just released a report titled: Breaking the Story: The Real Cost Of Low Wages At America's Largest Broadcaster, which outlined the realities of low pay at 14 Nexstar-owned News Stations across the country. While hard-working Newsroom Staff worry about being able to afford necessities like housing, medical care and groceries, Nexstar continues to slow-walk contract bargaining. As a result, the station will be deprived of important access to Elected Officials until management does right by NABET-CWA Members. NABET-CWA Local 22 Vice President Johnny Nixon said: “Over two years of this blatant stalling and ignoring of Democracy in the workplace is why the Union feels the company no longer has the right to ask Elected Officials for one-on-one interviews. These are the people that understand elections and why they matter. How would a nation function if Elected Officials were not allowed to take office, let alone do the work?” Assemblymember Harry Bronson said: “These Workers have made every attempt to negotiate, but management has ignored this vote, has refused to come to the table, has refused to honor the vote, and refused to recognize the rights of these Workers to Unionize.”
