Transit Workers Union (TWU) Local 100 is fighting back against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) with a Union-wide grievance after a management-created Workers compensation payment debacle resulted in potentially thousands of injured Local 100 Members not getting their checks on time. In May, management unilaterally moved payments for Workers Compensation and the differentials into the hands of payment processor Sedgwick. Local 100 President John Chiarello warned management not to make the move to Sedgwick if they weren’t ready. Less than two months later, the MTA told Chiarello and other officers that “a glitch in the system” could result in 2,500 claimants not getting their checks on time. In addition to the grievance, Chiarello sent two letters directly to MTA Chairman Janno Lieber blasting the agency for causing the debacle. “We believe that until every one of our Members’ claims are processed and paid appropriately your paycheck should be suspended” wrote Chiarello. “No Member should be without compensation due to your malfeasance in office while you receive a hefty check from the MTA.” Members out on Workers Compensation are facing enough difficulty without the financial burden of missed or late payments, the Union said.
