Legal Services’ Strike In New York City ‘Sees Major Wins, But Many Workers Remain On The Line’
Approximately 1,800 of the 2,000 Legal Services Workers represented by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys-United Auto Workers (ALAA-UAW) Local 2325 reached tentative contract agreements this week following powerful Strike actions and sustained public pressure. These agreements cover Attorneys and Support Staff at several organizations, including the Legal Aid Society, NYLAG, Bronx Defenders, Appellate Advocates and the Center for Appellate Litigation. Workers at CAMBA, the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD), the Urban Justice Center and Goddard Riverside Law Project remain on Strike, demanding the funding, staffing and support they need to continue delivering justice for low-income New Yorkers. Underfunded for decades, these Workers are taking a stand for fair wages, adequate resources and protections against burnout and high turnover - all issues that directly impact the quality of representation their clients receive.
