Up To 2,000 ALAA-UAW-Represented Legal Services Workers ‘Take a Stand With Rolling Strike Deadlines Across’ New York City
More than 2,000 Workers employed at nine non-profit Legal Services Providers located across each of New York City's five Boroughs - who are represented by the Association of Legal Advocates and Attorneys-United Auto Workers (ALAA-UAW) Local 2325, have authorized a Strike. Echoing the UAW's 2023 Stand Up Strike strategy, the Union Workers announced rolling Strike deadlines across multiple workplaces. Unionized Workers at Goddard Riverside Law Project began striking on July 9th and more could soon join them. Workers at NYLAG and the Urban Justice Center set a Strike deadline for July 15th and July 18th marks the Strike deadline for Unions at the Bronx Defenders, the Office of the Appellate Defender and Appellate Advocates. These escalations follow successful Strike Authorization Votes at two ALAA Chapters at the Legal Aid Society, CAMBA Legal Services and the Center for Appellate Litigation. Contract negotiations have been ongoing since February and none of the 11 coordinated Units has reached an agreement. While striking remains the last resort for the Union, each Unit’s fair and reasonable demands are as much about justice in the workplace as maintaining the quality of representation for the most vulnerable New Yorkers they represent on a daily basis, ALAA-UAW Officials said.
