Non-Teaching Staff At Campuses Across The University Of Alaska File To Form Union

Non-Teaching Staff at campuses across the University of Alaska (UA) system took a massive step toward securing a voice on the job by filing a petition to join the United Auto Workers (UAW). Workers dropped off their representation petition and signed Union Authorization Cards at the Alaska Labor Relations Agency. Formed under the name Coalition of Alaskan University Staff for Equity-UAW (CAUSE-UAW), the Unit includes University Staff who work in advising, enrollment assistance, financial aid, coaching, health care and other roles that support students and Faculty. Staff cite several reasons for organizing, including the need for improved pay and benefits, greater career development transparency, fair workloads and workplace protections. “Our work not only keeps the University of Alaska running and brings in millions in research investments but also has lasting impacts on tens of thousands of students who need support during this critical time in their lives,” said Laura Weingartner, Science Communicator with UA Fairbanks. “Improving our working conditions helps us serve more students and our community more efficiently and can help the University become even better able to contribute to Alaska’s economy. Particularly at this time of great uncertainty, we deserve a seat at the table.”
