NYSNA-Represented Montefiore Weiler Nurses ‘Enforce’ Safe Staffing In Their Contract, Nurses ‘Win Financial Remedy For Staffing Violations’

(THE BRONX, NEW YORK) - The 10-Member New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA)-represented North Medical Surgical Unit at Montefiore Weiler Hospital in the Bronx has been severely understaffed, despite increased patient acuity and increased bed capacity. The Unit has had up to four hallway beds, making delivering safe care to these patients a challenge. But NYSNA Nurses organized and held the hospital accountable - filing 150 protests of assignment. Five Nurses also gave compelling testimony describing the difficulties they experience on a daily basis. As a result, an Arbitrator found that there was indeed a pattern of understaffing on the Unit, which created an excessive workload for Nurses, and subsequently awarded a total of $84,515 to the Unionized Caregivers.
