Nearly 1,000 1199 SEIU-Represented Are Still On The Picket Line At Five WNY Nursing Homes After Two New Contract Settlements At Two Other Sites ‘Were Reached Just Hours Before A Seven-Day ULP Strikes Were Set To Begin’

(WESTERN NEW YORK) – 1199 Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Healthcare Workers East has announced two more contract settlements at Western New York Nursing Homes, just hours before a seven-day Unfair Labor Practices (ULP) was set to start.

However, Unionized Caregivers employed at five other major, for-profit, long-term care facilities remain on Strike as of Thursday (May 22nd).

1199 SEIU said it had reached two, three-year tentative agreements for Nursing Home Workers at Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Williamsville and at the Schofield Residence, bringing the total number of settlements in this campaign to six.

Strike notices at those two facilities were withdrawn as Workers will have a chance to review agreements and to vote in the coming days, Union Officials said.

Nursing Home Workers at five other for-profit, long-term care facilities in Western New York are on an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike at this moment.

Caregivers are protesting alleged bad faith bargaining and coercive tactics at the for-profit chains across Western New York.

Workers on Strike at the five area nursing homes are part of a larger campaign involving now 21 different facilities across the region.

1199 SEIU had filed ULP charges with National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on behalf of Workers against owners and operators at all five facilities on Strike, including: Absolut Care of Gasport; Elderwood at Lockport; Elderwood at Williamsville; Garden Gate Manor; and North Gate Manor.

Grace Bogdanove, who serves as 1199 SEIU Vice-President for WNY Nursing Homes, said: “The largest for-profit nursing home chains are unwilling to negotiate contracts that will help to recruit and retain Staff and it’s disrespectful to these Workers who have sacrificed so much. Some employers are threatening to stop health insurance coverage for Employees who opt to Strike and attempting to intimidate Workers by monitoring those who participate in Union meetings.”
