New Savannah Tech Apprenticeship Will Train Participants To Work On HMGMA Robots

Joseph Schwartzburt at The Savannah Morning News reports the largest tool that today's Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance Workers carry is a laptop, said Vice President for Economic Development at Savannah Technical College (Savannah Tech) Tal Loos. "Basically, they're Computer Programmers, but just programming an assembly line instead of a computer to run on your desktop," he said. The Savannah area now boasts one of the most advanced manufacturers in the world - otherwise known as Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). The Metaplant already employs more than 1,300 human Meta Pros, but also counts hundreds of Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMR) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) and two Boston Dynamics Spots, which assist with quality control, among its team. The Apprenticeship Program has eight available slots for its inaugural cohort. Young expects the program to grow overtime, but for now about 50 applicants have already applied to fill the few open spots. Some of those 50 will likely not meet the initial eligibility requirements, which entail being at least 18 years of age and either about to graduate high school or have had graduated within the last two years.
