UAW-Represented Workers ‘Protest Abrupt Layoffs’ At The Guggenheim Museum In New York City

Members of United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2110 rallied outside the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum to protest the abrupt layoffs of 20 Staffers, including 14 Union Members, without prior notice or Union representation. The museum's decision, which marks its third round of layoffs in five years, violates Members' contract and represents a refusal to bargain in good faith. Critical positions across departments were cut, while senior leadership maintained every dollar of their high salaries, Union Officials said. The rally coincided with the opening reception of Artist Rashid Johnson’s solo exhibition, drawing attention from well-heeled attendees and passersby alike. “I would like (museum leaders) to look at the people they’re laying off and not just the numbers,” Maureen Ahearn, a recently laid off Staffer who’d been working at the Guggenheim since 1992, told Hyperallergic.
