‘Powerhouse Partnership Developing Apprenticeships To Attract’ Nursing Home Workers

Zee Johnson at McKnights Long-Term Care News reports two long-term care powerhouses are supporting an Apprenticeship Program aiming to prove Nursing Home Aides are as critical as any other Worker in a facility. The Moving Forward Coalition, along with the LeadingAge LTSS Center at UMass Boston, is backing a Federally-funded initiative to develop Certified Nursing Assistants (CAN) Apprenticeship Programs. The Registered Apprenticeships will be the result of nursing homes’ collaborations with 19 health care and academic institutions that received more than $200 million in funding from the Department of Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant established Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs (GWEPs), which are molding the future of the CNA profession, an important aspect since Aides have long been considered an “unskilled profession,” Robyn Stone, who serves as Co-Director of the LTSS Center at UMass Boston, told McKnight’s Long-Term Care News. Apprentices in the program are sharpening their skills by obtaining a required minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of clinical training each year.
