COURIER & The Writers Guild Of America East Announce Voluntary Recognition Of Staff Union

(NEW YORK & WASHINGTON, D.C.) - COURIER and the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) have announced voluntary recognition of COURIER’s Staff Union.

Since the beginning of this process, COURIER and WGAE have engaged in productive and positive conversations for voluntary recognition, reflecting our shared commitment to fostering a collaborative and supportive workplace, the Union and management said.

The 50-Member Bargaining Unit - which includes Reporters, Editors, Designers and Social Media Managers, represents the core Creative and Editorial Staff who contribute to COURIER’s work and mission.

Tara McGowan, the CEO and Founder of COURIER, said: “COURIER strongly believes in the rights of Workers to organize and will uphold our commitment to supporting Unionization. We know that this effort will enable our Journalists, Creators and Staff to continue to produce exceptional values-driven, impactful journalism that is accessible to all.”

The COURIER United Organizing Committee said: “We are pleased that COURIER has opted to voluntarily recognize our Union at this crucial time when Media Workers everywhere are fighting for stronger protections against layoffs and better pay. We look forward to negotiating a strong contract that empowers every Worker at COURIER as we navigate the ongoing transformation of our industry.”

WGAE Vice President of Online Media Sara David said: “I’m so happy to welcome the COURIER Staff to the Writers Guild of America East. We appreciate that management at COURIER upheld its progressive values by working quickly to recognize the Union. Every newsroom benefits from a strong Union contract. We look forward to continuing constructive discussions and negotiations to ensure a fair and equitable agreement that benefits all parties.”

WGAE represents more than 7,500 Members who work in film, television, news, podcasts and on-line media.
