Thousands Of U.S. Postal Workers ‘Rally To Stamp Out Privatization Plans’ As Postmaster General DeJoy ‘Resigns’ As USPS Chief ‘After Clash With Elon Musk's DOGE’

Thousands of Workers across the country hit the streets over the weekend to say Hell No! to dismantling the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) organized rallies in cities across the U.S. in response to threats from the Trump Administration to privatize the USPS. NALC President Brian Renfroe declared the moves by the government as an assault on all 640,000 Postal Employees and on eight million jobs attached to USPS. Speaking at a rally in Los Angeles, Renfroe called it an attack on an institution central to the U.S. economy, on 51.5 million rural households and businesses, and the 300 million Americans who rely on USPS. The rallies come after the USPS agreed to work with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut 10,000 jobs and billions of dollars from the USPS budget. Politicians from all sides of the political spectrum turned up in support of Postal Workers at the protests as they brandished signs saying Fight Like Hell!, U.S. Mail Not For Sale and ‘Hell No! to privatization. NALC “opposes any plans to eliminate the USPS leadership, abolish regulatory oversight and carve up postal operations.” In a show of solidarity, American Postal Workers Union (APWU) President Mark Dimondstein joined a rally with NALC Members in Silver Spring, Maryland, along with National AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. APWU held their own action day last week with thousands upon thousands of Postal Workers taking part. In a rally in Washington D.C., Dimondstein said: “We’re trying to alert the public - the people of the country - that our postal services are truly in danger. This is not a one-off day, this is the beginning of an ongoing fight.”

Meanwhile, USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy (Pictured Above/USPS Website Photo) has resigned following reports of a fallout with Elon Musk's DOGE. His resignation comes at a time when President Donald Trump has floated the idea of privatizing the USPS. Trump has already hinted at potentially putting USPS under the Commerce Department to stop losses at the $78 billion-a-year agency. DeJoy, a Republican donor, was appointed in 2020 by Trump during his first term. According to The Washington Post, DeJoy fell out of favor with Trump after refusing to provide complete USPS data access to DOGE. Instead, DeJoy insisted that major changes should be made through Congress.

NALC released the following statement after DeJoy’s exit from the USPS, which read - in part: The USPS Board of Governors' search for a new leader of the agency comes at a critical time for Letter Carriers and everyone who depends on our service. The next Postmaster General must continue modernizing and investing in USPS' infrastructure while maintaining quality universal service funded by postage, not taxpayer dollars. They must value and empower the 640,000 Postal Service Employees, 73,000 of whom are Veterans, who serve the American People. They must work in good faith with NALC, our Sister Unions and other stakeholders to get necessary retirement fund investment and accounting policy changes done in Congress.  Finally, the next Postmaster General must fundamentally believe in the agency as a public service and be committed to guaranteeing the universal service Americans rely on. NALC urges the Board to seek out a candidate who meets these criteria. The future of the Postal Service is on the line and choosing someone with innovative ideas and appreciation for our Constitutionally mandated service is essential.
