Michigan Lawmakers ‘Side With Corporations, Slash Wages For Workers’
Cameron Harrison at People’s World reports that in a blatant attack on Working Families, Michigan’s Legislature has pushed through legislation that undermines a landmark State Supreme Court ruling, slashing planned wage increases for more than 500,000 Workers. The move is viewed by Organized Labor as a direct betrayal of Michigan’s Working Class, who’ve fought tirelessly for fair wages and basic workplace protections. The original 2018 ballot initiatives would have raised the minimum wage to $15, phased out sub-minimum tipped wages, and guaranteed five to nine paid sick days, per year. But after the election, the Republican-led House gutted these measures, sparking a legal battle that culminated in the Court’s ruling. Now, instead of respecting the Court’s decision, Lawmakers are doubling down on their Anti-Worker agenda. Michigan AFL-CIO President Rob Bieber called out the Legislature’s underhanded tactics, saying: “Six years ago, a Republican majority used unconstitutional tricks to deny Workers a pay raise and Paid Sick Leave. Now, they’re trying to pull the rug out from under Working Families again. Every Legislator who votes for this should be held accountable.”
