Jonathan Rosenblum at The Nation reports the result in the end was disappointing, but not surprising. By an overwhelming final vote of 2,447-to-829, Amazon Workers at the massive RDU1 Warehouse in Garner, North Carolina have rejected Union Representation. The campaign pitted the Independent Union CAUSE (Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment) against the second largest private employer in the U.S. To label this a David-versus-Goliath fight would be an understatement. CAUSE is a homegrown Union, started by RDU1 workers three years ago around core demands - including a $30/hour starting wage, more paid time off, reasonable lunch breaks, and safety. CAUSE Members scrabbled together a bare-bones campaign budget with online fundraising campaigns and small grants. They built the fight with their own unpaid time and community volunteers. In the longer arc of Organized Labor’s struggle to organize Amazon, the CAUSE effort stands as another battleground where overmatched Workers valiantly fought back. One hopes CAUSE Organizers will draw lessons about the need to have a disciplined, tested and broad Union structure before plunging into battle again.
