Monterey Bay Aquarium Workers Launch Union Campaign
Workers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have launched their campaign to join American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 57 as part of the Union’s national Cultural Workers United campaign. Staff are organizing under the name Monterey Bay Aquarium Workers United (MBAWU) and have cited the need for fair pay, comprehensive benefits and career transparency as core motivators for joining AFSCME. This news comes as the Aquarium celebrates its 40th anniversary. Members emphasize their decision to organize is made with the health and longevity of their workplace in mind. In a public letter, the MBAWU said: “We know this announcement will make waves, but by immersing ourselves in hope we will hold fast to our principles and surge ahead to create a rising tide that lifts us all. We trust our leadership to honor our organizing, refrain from Union Busting tactics and work with us collaboratively to build a better Aquarium. We, the Employees of Monterey Bay Aquarium, stand united.”
